Why YRMC Created the Healthy Kids Program

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity rates have nearly tripled in children and adolescents over the past 30 years. Kids who are overweight are at higher risk for early high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea and depression. Yuma Regional Medical Center has developed the Healthy Kids program to teach kids healthy habits that will lead to a lifetime of health and wellness.

How the Healthy Kids Program Works

Healthy Kids is a 12-week education program designed to teach kids and their families how to practice healthier eating and exercise habits so they can work towards achieving a normal weight and better health. The group meets once a week in a classroom setting where a dietitian, exercise physiologist and other healthcare professionals present sessions on eating right, staying active, understanding emotions and developing a positive self-image. Families also learn how to develop healthy habits for shopping and meal planning. Fun activities such as Zumba and yoga lessons, an obstacle course and a pedometer challenge/scavenger hunt are also included. All sessions are scheduled on weekday evenings and last 90 minutes.

Who Qualifies to Participate in Healthy Kids

Healthy Kids is open to children ages 8 to 12 who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) above the 85th percentile. To determine whether a child’s BMI falls within this level, parents or guardians can use the CDC Child & Teen BMI Percentile Calculator at The program is limited to 20 children (and their parents or guardians). As each session fills up, a waitlist will be created for the next one.

How to Enroll Your Child in Healthy Kids

There are two ways to register for the program:

Physician Referral: A child’s primary care physician can refer them to the program.

Self-Referral: Parents or guardians can refer a child who has received a physical exam from his/her primary provider within six months of participating in Healthy Kids.

It is highly recommended (though not required) that the physical exam include fasting lipid and glucose panels. Children should also be screened by their primary care provider for any mood, anxiety or personality disorders that may limit their ability to succeed in the program.
